The difference between primes and zoom lenses
The Zoom Lens

Zoom lenses have variable focal lengths. Unlike a prime lens, by turning the focal ring you can make the subject bigger or smaller and change what is viewable within the frame without moving yourself. The object can be zoomed in bigger or zoomed out smaller just by spinning the ring inwards or outwards to refocus the internal glass within the zoom lens.

Prime lens

The main difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens is of focal length. While prime lenses have a fixed focal length, zoom lenses, on the other hand, have a wider and variable focal length.

A prime lens is one where you cannot change the focal length (i.e, the field of view is 'fixed'). Unlike a zoom, getting your subject closer or further away is only possible by physically moving.
